It was a sunny June day in Poreč, a town on the Istrian coast of Croatia. The summer air was almost tangible, and if I closed my eyes and ignored the seagulls’ cries and the sound of waves in the harbor, I might have mistaken the surroundings for the Sahara. Such a heatwave swept through Istria in the pre-summer month! Going outside for long without a bottle of water? You’d be sure to get a sunstroke!
My partner and I wisely agreed on this, and before heading out to admire the sights, we stopped by a store for two bottles of water. One of the shops that always has water and is ideally located on the way is Müller, with an enormous selection of perfumes, many of which you simply HAVE to try on every visit! It’s impossible to walk past the shelves without stopping and inhaling a few of the fragrant essences! A few months ago, I found myself kneeling before the Guerlain Aqua Allegoria collection.
Do you remember the Passiflora version that took my breath away back in February? I renamed it the essence of summer, fell in love with it, and I won’t let go of it until the bottle is drained of every last drop of perfume! It’s incredible! One whiff and you’re done, my friends!

The entire Aqua Allegoria line is a safe bet!
And, really, the entire Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line is the same – Coconut Fizz, Herba Fresca, Pera Granita, Limon Verde, or Mandarine Basilic. And there are many more! You’d want to drench yourself in these scents from head to toe, all at once. That’s nearly what I did in the perfumery, haha… It’s impossible to pick just one! If only…
If only the Bergamote Calabria variant didn’t exist. This one is IT! A scent so captivating and alluring to my nose that, if it were a person, they’d have to call the police on me for stalking, because I would refuse to leave its fragrant cloud’s reach! Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria knocked me to my knees in a way that the original Bottega Veneta did back in 2012.

From the first sniff, Thierry Wasser, the fragrance’s creator, became my hero. If I met him on the street, I’d throw my arms around him in gratitude and kiss both his cheeks a thousand times out of sheer excitement! He managed to create something so irresistible that I’m seriously considering buying three more bottles to keep just in case they ever stop making this perfection! If that were to happen (God forbid!), I swear I’d hunt the guy down and extract the exact ingredient proportions from him! That’s how much it got to me!

What I Smell in Bergamote Calabria
But how would I describe the scent to someone who has never held a bottle of Bergamote Calabria and only has the online description to rely on? Hmmmm, let me think…
Although most people would classify this perfume as a fresh citrus scent, I wouldn’t describe it that way. Yes, there are citrus notes, but it’s neither orange, grapefruit, nor lemon. It’s orange leaves (petitgrain) and bergamot. A gentler and more sophisticated version of classic lemonade, I’d say. But forget about the scent of cleaning products or lemon-scented dishwashing liquids. This fragrance doesn’t go anywhere near those!
Bergamote Calabria reminds me of a sweetened bergamot tea you sip lukewarm in a sun-warmed orange grove. It’s as though you’ve walked up to a tree and embraced its leafy branches, feeling their warmth. The breeze gathers the fragrant tones from the entire grove, enveloping you as tightly as if you fell back into the sea and the water closed over you. The scent is not heavy, and you could easily wear it while traveling by train in a crowded compartment with ten people and a broken air conditioner.

A fragrance that radiates optimism and the joy of life
I bet no one in the compartment would complain about the perfume. On the contrary! Everyone would crowd closer to you, hoping the scent would help them rediscover the tiniest bits of optimism that had been lost in the dark corners of their minds. Because that’s exactly what Bergamote Calabria does when you’re feeling down. It makes you smile. But not in a fake, forced way. The scent lights you up from the inside, and your smile just happens naturally. And if I really let my imagination run wild, I’d compare the effect of the fragrance to Iron Man’s chest alarm lighting up! Seriously, I feel like the sunny contents of the bottle ignite something inside you and wrap you in a pleasant protective shield against a bad day, bad weather, bad people, anything. Now that’s some fantastic stuff! 🙂
So, whenever you need the strength of an entire orange grove, think of Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria! I love it with all my heart, and it shares first place in my perfume collection with the classic Bottega Veneta. No other fragrance has managed to do that. NONE!
Longevity of the Fragrance
Before I completely drift away on my dreamy cloud of scent, I should probably mention a few thoughts about longevity, right? I stop smelling the fragrance on myself after about an hour, but this happens with most perfumes that blend well with my skin, and I consider them my absolute favorites. However, I can still smell it on my clothes until I wash them. So I have to remember which perfume I wore with which outfit!
